What’s happening at London Festival of Architecture 2018
Churchill recognised the connection between architecture and identity when he said: “we shape our buildings and afterwards our buildings shape us” – Whether consciously or not, people identify with their surroundings. What an incredible choice by the LFA team selecting ‘identity’ as this year’s theme.
With an array of events exploring the theme of identity you might feel spoilt for choice in what events to pick from the core and fringe programmes.
Take a look at Hannah and Kate’s top picks.
Hannah & Kate’s Top Picks for London Architectural Festival
Friday 1st June - Open studio nights – Clerkenwell
The LFA open studio nights are one of the most widely attended and Hannah and Kate know why! Visiting AJ100 Architectural practices in Clerkenwell throughout the evening gives you the opportunity to see practises in their natural environments and find out about exciting and innovative new projects in the London scene.
Friday 8th June – Foreign and Commonwealth Office Walking Tour
Designed and built by George Gilbert Scott and Matthew Digby Wyatt 1866-74, the building came under serious debate in parliament and became an issue of public discourse in the 19th century which came to be known as the Battle of the Styles, centring on the desire to express national identity through architectural commissions.
This is not one to miss – the tour given by Historic England’s Inspector of Historic Buildings; Billy Reading will give you the opportunity to visit many of the fine rooms in this controversial building.
Friday June 15th LFA Symposium – Does Identity Matter? In partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts
Are you interested in the influences of social and spatial identities on urban change? The London Festival of Architecture will put on an exploration of identity in the context of individual and collective expression, place-making and architectural practise.
With two expert panels building on specific case studies ranging from Shapira and Neve Sha’anan neighbourhoods in Tel Aviv to the former Ford factory in Dagenham, the first panel chaired by Rob Bevan will look into how a city’s identity can be pulled apart through various architectural and spatial interventions.
